Children's Book Awards
There are several high profile awards - for example, the American Newbery Medal and the UK's Nestle Children's book award - devoted specifically to children's books. In addition many of the more established literary awards also have categories for the best books for children. Together they form a great guide to the best in entertaining children's books.
Carnegie Medal, 2008
Philip Reeve won the 2008 Carnegie Medal for his book, "Here Lies Arthur". Among others, he beat
last year's winner, Meg Rosoff, who was back on the shortlist again with another book, "What I Was".

Children's Laureate 2007-09
Michael Rosen became the fifth Children's Laureate for 2007 - 2009. He is well known for children's books that use beautiful rhyming and wordplay - perhaps none more so than, "Sonsense Nongs" with its highly descriptive subtitle, Michael Rosen's Book of Silly Songs, Daft Ditties, Crazy Croons, Loony Lyrics, Batty Ballads.

Newbery Medal - 2008
Laura Amy Schlitz won the prestigous 2008 American Newbery Medal for "Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!".
Subtitled, "Voices from a Medieval Village", this most original book tells the story of thirteenth century
England through the eyes of its inhabitants.

Nestlé Childrens Book Prize
"Ottoline and the Yellow Cat" by Chris Riddell won the 2007 Nestlé Childrens Books For 6 to 8 Years Old category. Matt Haig took the
prize for older children (aged 9 - 11) with "Shadow Forest", and
When a Monster Is Born" by Sean Taylor was judged the best book for ages five and under.

Award. The overall Costa Book of the Year is announced in late Jan 2008.

National Book Awards - Young People's Literature
"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" was
judged the Best Book for Young People at the 2007 US National Book Awards. This book aimed at 12 - 16 year olds by Sherman Alexie beat
four other shortlisted books for teenagers.
